Highways To Safety

May 27, 2022

Gray Asphalt road during nighttime.

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
Hebrews 12:14 (KJV).

REFLECT:
Highways are usually very popular roads within a city or town. They could also be main roads that connect tighter towns, cities, or areas within a city or town.

There is always a rush of excitement when driving down a highway which car drivers can testify to. Therefore, there are speed limits set on many of these highways and roads in general, to accommodate and protect the constitution of every road user and also to prevent accidents.

The reason for this excitement may never be fully known, after all, human beings can be easily excitable and we are always in a big rush to get somewhere and do or accomplish something.

Nevertheless, all we need to know about highways as it relates to our reflections for today is that-
1. They lead to somewhere.
2. They act as connectors.
3. They are a major and popular route.
4. They act as facilitators to get us to our destination.
5. They are created to fulfill a specific purpose.
6. They act as markers or landmarks.
All these are very interesting characteristics and roles highways play to help us achieve our daily goals.

It is quite sad that a lot of the time we as humans do not pay much attention to the physical world around us and, as a result of our lack of awareness and attention to detail, hardly ever consider the spiritual world, especially, with how both worlds function and which out of the two take precedence over the other.

Just like Jesus tried to explain to Nicodemus in response to his question– how can I be born again, do I have to go back into my mother’s womb and be born a second time? (John 3:4 Paraphrased). Jesus in his response tried to present the technicality from a spiritual standpoint of what being born again meant.

However, Jesus felt He was going nowhere with this explanation. Nicodemus just couldn’t get the picture. Jesus realizes the reason why just like every one of us with an unregenerated spirit Nicodemus found it very hard to understand. First and foremost, he could not fully understand the physical world in which he existed, and so the spiritual was so farfetched. Hear Jesus’s response to Nicodemus’ condition “Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? (John 3:10-12 KJV).

We can all relate to Nicodemus’ condition, especially when we are way off the regeneration spectrum, or we are in the middle of it, as our perceptions and understanding are dulled for a lack of focus and attention to detail.

So, what is the point here, one would ask? The point being presented here is that there are spiritual markers or landmarks, just like there are physical markers. However, like was said before, the spiritual always supersedes and influences the physical. Just like we saw in the story of Jesus and Nicodemus.

Now bringing this home to our Bible verse for today, and relating it to the title of our reflections, we are faced with two spiritual markers or landmarks namely: Peace and Holiness. Both of which serve as major Highways to a particular destination or goal.
This destination leads to the full knowledge and revelation of the Glory of God Almighty and all that pertains to His Kingdom.

Very important to note here is that without these two crucial highways we can never get to the point of seeing or knowing God. So, how can we position ourselves on the Highways of Peace and Holiness?

Just like every one of God’s Kingdom protocols, the first step in the process is to acknowledge and accept Jesus’s sacrifice on the Cross and His subsequent resurrection from the dead. As we do this we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, who works in us through the knowledge of the Word of God directing and positioning us on the right pathways or Highways to get into a closer relationship with God.

The Bible is full of scriptures that point us to living a life of peace and Holiness, it just takes us to put in a little bit of effort to discover them. Here are a few verses to help us: 2 Timothy 2:22; Micah 6:8; Leviticus 20:28; 1 Peter 3:11; Galatians 5: 20-26; 1 John 4:7-8.

In the process of studying God’s Word, we get to know God’s heart–what He wants and loves, how He wants us to represent His Kingdom, and how we ought to relate to and treat our fellow-men whom He died for with the same love, kindness, compassion, grace, and mercy He showed for us while we were sinners before we even knew Him. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 KJV.

It is, therefore, our willingness through our relationship with God, our obedience to put into practice the principles and commandments in the Word of God–using this as a guide on how to effectively relate with the people in our lives–that would set us on the right course that is the Highways of Peace and Holiness which will get us safely to our intended destination.
