All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV).
REFLECT:
A good number of us have gone through some kind of formal education following either a particular secular educational or religious curriculum. The purpose of curriculums simply put, is to train and transform the mindset and behavior of a person or group of people to follow particular teaching, laid down principles and techniques in an area of learning or discipline, and to develop skills that can be used to practice what they have learned to create a better society for all.
There are different curriculums out there striving to achieve their mandated goals for training, learning, and transformation. Some of these curriculums have done a wonderful job, why? Because they have tried to be all-inclusive in their educational approach by not only targeting the physical, mental, psychological, and emotional constitution of the learner but have gone a bit further to appeal to the conscience of the learner.
However, even though such curriculums have made good strides and we commend them, they have not truly captured the whole essence of life and man’s existence, and until we understand the whole aspect of transformative learning we cannot fully say these curriculums meet the standard.
This brings us to explore the following questions:
What pattern(s) of teaching and learning meet this high standard and expectations of life? Does such mode of teaching and learning under our review give us an accurate understanding of man’s existence? What are the lifelong benefits presented by such a curriculum?
Of course, this curriculum pathway in question is the word of God. This will be explained in detail in the following paragraphs in the light of our Bible verse for today.
Our Bible verse for today presents a unique curriculum pathway for teaching and learning that transcends the physical, mental, emotional, psychological, and conscience of man, and reaches further into the spiritual and eternal where real transformation takes place.
It is only when the spiritual and eternal transformation takes place and are brought into perspective that the other aspects that form the earthly components of man can then become transformed such that it would result in lifelong benefits for the individual and the society at large.
In a nutshell, this is what our Bible verse teaches us as it highlights how scripture acts as a transformative curriculum. Firstly, scripture is given by the inspiration of God and thus has within itself a life-giving force, because it has the seal and stamp of God’s Divine Presence.
Secondly, it is profitable, beneficial, or useful for doctrine ie teaching, and learning, which possess the ability to transform the whole facet of the life of man totally and completely. This is because such teaching and learning brings us in line with God’s will, purpose, and calling for our individual lives and existence.
Thirdly, it is for reproof, meaning that it can deeply expose the sinful nature in man, giving critical feedback concerning when and where we have gone wrong and what has caused us to derail from the will, path, and purposes of God for our lives.
Fourthly, it corrects us, that is allowing us to rectify any mistakes we have made using a variety of methods to do so e.g. encouragement, discipline, reprimand, and support.
The fifth point is that it is for instruction, it can give us clear and direct rules, information, directions, techniques, and skills to apply that would yield huge benefits for righteousness in this present life and in the life to come.
When we immerse ourselves in scripture realizing that it is the sole curriculum for our total well-being, our purpose for life, and for Godly living, we will then begin to appreciate the transformation process it provides.
