For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (KJV).
REFLECT:
It always calls for caution when working with very sharp objects. Nobody in their right minds would want to carelessly play with a butcher’s knife or even a surgical blade. There are certain tools, materials, and equipment we must take very seriously when we have ourselves handling or working with for they might make or break us.
However, one good thing about navigating and using instruments and tools we are ignorant about is acquiring the best knowledge to do so. Without the knowledge of how and why certain things work we end up misusing or mishandling such things. Then what happens? We end up failing terribly, and not achieving the results we have intended.
When we get to know how things work, we end up using them to work to our advantage. This kind of advantage brings us huge success, fulfillment, joy, prosperity, etc, which by the way is everybody’s dream and aspiration. Every one of us would like to succeed and have fulfillment in life, right? Nobody wants to be a failure. This is the reality our Bible verse brings our way today.
Our Bible verse for today presents to us the most important tool, equipment, instrument, and manual we would ever need if we are to succeed and prosper not only in this life but also in eternity. This tool, equipment, instrument, and manual talked about here is the ‘Word of God,’ the Bible.
We are presented with a vivid description of God’s Word, its characteristics, and functionalities it portrays as the most useful and viable instrument, equipment, tool, and manual. This is its ability to be
– active– full of power.
– Operative–very effective and energizing.
– Very sharp–even sharper than a double-edged sword. Its sharpness penetrates with laser blade precision and can divide components such as (i) the breath of life–the soul. (ii) immortal life—the spirit. (iii). Joints and marrow—the body and the deepest components and parts of our nature.
Furthermore, God’s Word can expose, sift, analyze, and judge the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. It has the ability to transform and renew our lives in every way possible.
From all that is said above, we can conclude this very one thing, the word of God can be likened to a living and active scalpel that can be used for a surgical renewal both spiritually and physically.
This is huge stuff that cannot be toyed with or played around with. It is a realization that must be taken very seriously if we must navigate this life successfully. In doing so we must be trained on how to approach this Word and how to use it for our good, but most of all for the Glory of God.
So how can we be trained in the Word of God? First and foremost, will be our decision to accept Jesus into our lives. John 3:16; Romans 10:9-10.
Secondly, we must be open to receive, and surrender to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes alongside us to teach and help us to study God’s Word and enables us to get a deeper and better understanding of the Word.
We must be willing to spend time in prayer and studying the Word of God and allow the Holy Spirit’s ministrations to take root in our lives. 2Timothy 2:15.
As we study God’s Word through the guidance and tutelage of the Holy Spirit, the Word comes alive and active, functioning and expressing itself powerfully in the different dimensions explained in our Bible verse of the day.
The only way we can understand and experience the Word of God as a Power tool–A Living, Active Scalpel for A Surgical Renewal, is to be willing to sit under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit.
